چکیده

It is important to develop best management practices for novel tall fescue systems in the southern Great Plains of North America, especially since cool-season perennials are not well known or commonly utilized in this region. This review paper summarizes the research activities in this region of the southern Great Plains for developing new perennial tall fescue systems (establishment, legume-grass systems, and production and economics). Establishment of tall fescue can be achieved after controlling annual grassy weeds (in both spring to prevent seed production and autumn after weed germination) and drilling seed in late September. Alfalfa and annual medics may be suited to this region that receives rainfall between 600 to 900 mm yr-1. However under certain conditions, alfalfa can outcompete tall fescue in mixed species pastures. Utilizing alternating and perpendicular row orientations may allow for successful establishment, improved utilization of tall fescue, and greater persistence of alfalfa and tall fescue. The perennial tall fescue system can be profitable after the first year if stand life is amortized over 5 years, and may have similar net returns to the annual rye/ ryegrass system, although the annual system consistently provided greater number of grazing days and total steer gain. Future research will continue to develop and refine strategies for optimal beef production from perennial tall fescue systems.

Currencies of Mutualisms: Sources of Alkaloid Genes in Vertically Transmitted Epichloae

The epichloae (Epichloë and Neotyphodium species), a monophyletic group of fungi in the family Clavicipitaceae, are systemic symbionts of cool-season grasses (Poaceae subfamily Poöideae). Most epichloae are vertically transmitted in seeds (endophytes), and most produce alkaloids that attack nervous systems of potential herbivores. These protective metabolites include ergot alkaloids and indole-...

A novel test for host-symbiont codivergence indicates ancient origin of fungal endophytes in grasses.

Significant phylogenetic codivergence between plant or animal hosts (H) and their symbionts or parasites (P) indicates the importance of their interactions on evolutionary time scales. However, valid and realistic methods to test for codivergence are not fully developed. One of the systems where possible codivergence has been of interest involves the large subfamily of temperate grasses (Pooide...

Mechanisms of drought stress tolerance in cool season grasses

Drought stress is one of the most limiting abiotic stresses affecting growth, production and survival of plants in many areas of the world, and is expected to intensify considering the trend of climate change. Grass species are important for the sustainability of agricultural systems, forage resources for animal farming and landscapes. Grass species adapt to water deficit by different morpholog...

Abundant Degenerate Miniature Inverted-Repeat Transposable Elements in Genomes of Epichloid Fungal Endophytes of Grasses

Miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements (MITEs) are abundant repeat elements in plant and animal genomes; however, there are few analyses of these elements in fungal genomes. Analysis of the draft genome sequence of the fungal endophyte Epichloë festucae revealed 13 MITE families that make up almost 1% of the E. festucae genome, and relics of putative autonomous parent elements were ide...

Advances in Research on Epichloë endophytes in Chinese Native Grasses

Epichloë fungal endophytes are broadly found in cool-season grasses. The symbiosis between these grasses and Epichloë may improve the abiotic and biotic resistance of the grass plant, but some Epichloë species produce alkaloids that are toxic for livestock. Therefore, it is important to understand the characteristics of the grass-Epichloë s symbiosis so that the beneficial aspects can be preser...
